Frequently Asked Questions
Artwork Selection
How do I choose a piece of artwork to buy?
The best way to choose artwork is simply to pay attention to what draws your eye. Look for what resonates with you. A strong painting rewards repeated viewing and holds your interest the longer you look at it. If a work feels compelling or creates a particular atmosphere you want in your home, it is usually a good choice. Classical paintings were created to communicate clearly through beauty, form, and narrative, so a natural response to the image is often the best guide.
What if I don’t know anything about art or art history?
Art is like perfume or cologne. If a perfume smells good it’s obvious. You don’t need to know the theory behind it or the backstory. If the art looks good it's obvious. If you like it you like it.
Classical paintings were created to be understood and appreciated by ordinary viewers as well as scholars.
You do not need any formal knowledge to make a choice. You only need your intuition.
Over time, living with the artwork often deepens appreciation naturally.
What format should I buy?
The moth-eye framed print and the framed canvas tend to offer the most classic gallery presentation. Canvas wrap is the best for those on a budget. The aluminum print is modern and sleek. The wood print is rustic and warm.
Moth-Eye Lens (Framed Print)
This is the most refined and museum-like presentation. The print is framed behind a special anti-reflective lens that eliminates glare, allowing the artwork to be seen clearly from any angle. This option offers the most precise color and detail and is ideal for collectors who want the most faithful viewing experience.
Canvas Wrap
This format has a painterly appearance that resembles an original oil painting and works well in both traditional and contemporary interiors. This one has an organic feel to it. Most of the paintings in our catalog were originally painted on a canvas, so this gives an authentic feel.
Framed Canvas
A framed canvas wrap. This combines the texture and depth of canvas with the structure and elegance of a frame, creating a more finished and gallery-like presentation.
Aluminum Print
The artwork is infused into a smooth aluminum surface. Colors appear vibrant and the surface is very durable. This format has a clean, modern look with strong clarity and contrast. If your room has things that are metallic or vibrant and which might overpower softer tones, then the aluminum print is a good choice.
Wood Print
The image is printed onto a natural wood panel. This one has a warm and organic appearance that pairs well with rustic or natural interiors.
What size should I buy?
Size should be determined primarily by the wall where the artwork will be displayed. Larger walls typically benefit from larger works that can anchor the space, while smaller walls are better suited to modest sizes that feel balanced rather than crowded.
Technical Questions
What is a fine art print?
A fine art print is a high-quality printed image of a painting or artwork produced using archival materials and specialized printing processes designed for art reproduction. Unlike posters or mass-market prints, fine art prints are made with careful attention to color accuracy, tonal depth, and detail so that the visual character of the original painting is preserved as faithfully as possible. When properly produced and displayed, a fine art print presents the artwork in a refined and durable form suitable for long-term display.
How is ApolloTerra different from other print stores?
In short: Our source image standards, our manufacturing standards, and our artistic standards.
Source Image Standards
Our exclusive private collection of high-resolution images is unmatched. We do not sell a print if the source image is not high resolution. Other brands don’t seem to care about this, as they sell prints of artwork that are not available in high resolution, which means the print will be blurry when it arrives to you. Or they use AI to upscale it, which spoils the integrity of the art. The AI makes the details sharper but the AI of today does not preserve the balance of values and forms, and then the art loses the deliberate and skillfully-made harmony that made it great. Typically this causes the painting to look flatter and overall less charming. We do not use any upscaling. We rely on the quality of the source-images themselves. For many of the paintings here you can’t even find such high-resolution images anymore. Because of our standards here, our collection is more limited. There are some famous paintings which we have not acquired high-resolution sources for (such image files cannot be found on the internet), but in the future we intend to travel to those museums to capture them.
Manufacturing Standards
From printing to presentation to packaging, every stage of the process is handled with greater care and attention to detail. We have sourced the best printers and the best methods, all for the purpose of bringing the best results in terms of the classical art experience.
Artistic Standards
People often say that art is subjective. In one sense this is true: taste plays a role. But the same is true in many areas of life. Taste matters in food as well, yet most people would agree that a well-prepared meal is always better than something poorly made.
Art is similar. While personal preference exists, works created with exceptional skill, harmony, and beauty have always stood above the rest. ApolloTerra’s catalog focuses on that higher standard. This standard is the thread that connects the artistic prowess of Western Civilization from its beginnings over two thousand years ago to the present day.
What does museum-grade mean?
“Museum-grade” refers to the level of materials and printing standards used to produce the artwork. Museum-grade prints are made with archival materials designed for long-term preservation, including high-quality inks and substrates that resist fading and deterioration. The goal is to produce a print that faithfully preserves the color, detail, and tonal depth of the original painting while remaining stable for many years under normal display conditions. All of our prints are museum-grade.
Is a print different from a reproduction?
In traditional art terminology, a reproduction usually refers to a painting that has been hand-painted to copy an original work. It is a new painting made after the original, rather than a printed image.
The downside of a reproduction is that the copy is not as good as the original. It's like buying a CD of a cover-band when you want the original. In the case of many of the paintings here, there are no living artists who can replicate them as well as the original artist. Bouguereau is a good example; no one alive today can reproduce his paintings to match the prowess of the original.
What category of art is this?
The artwork in our catalog can simply be called classical art, or classical fine art.
More specifically, it belongs primarily to the tradition of classical European fine art and its expansions, including academic, neoclassical, and romantic painting. These works emphasize realism, harmony, craftsmanship, and timeless subject matter, often depicting mythology, history, landscapes, and idealized human figures.
What value does this art have?
The value of classical art lies in its enduring aesthetic and cultural significance. These paintings represent some of the highest achievements of the Western artistic tradition and the Western spirit.
The art in our catalog is genuinely beautiful and good, and that gives it inherent value.
It has a firm place in history and it holds a unique and powerful cultural force. Most people will instantly recognize the worth of this art as soon as they see it, even if they can't express how.
Is AI used in any of the artwork?
No. The artworks themselves are historical paintings created by master artists. The prints are produced from high-quality source images of those original works. No artificial intelligence is used to generate or alter the artwork. AI is not used to upscale any of the images.
Will the art appear different in person?
Yes, it will look better in person.
Digital screens can slightly alter color, brightness, and contrast. These works were made in person, to be seen in person.
Size is another factor. On a small screen it's not as impressive, but a large canvas has a great impact.
How is the art produced and restored?
The prints are produced from a private collection of high-resolution images of the original paintings. When necessary, digital restoration techniques are used to remove discoloration that can happen from aging. The goal of this process is to present the artwork as faithfully as possible to how the original painting would appear under ideal viewing conditions on the day it was made.
Are frames included?
A frame is included with the moth-eye framed print, and with the framed canvas. The other formats do not require a frame.
Our frames come in the three main colors; gold, black, and brown.
What printing process is used?
Our fine art printing processes use advanced high-resolution giclée printers capable of producing extremely detailed images with subtle color gradations. These processes are specifically designed for artwork and photography, allowing the print to capture the depth, texture, and tonal range present in the original painting.
How long will the prints last under normal conditions?
They're designed to last 100-200 years in optimal conditions. Direct sunlight is the main thing that makes it fade sooner than that.
